I just discovered a fairly major mistake on OpenDrive's part. A user's daily allotted bandwidth is NOT relative to the actual amount of data they transfer from their account. Instead, it's based soley on the size of the files in the account, and how many times they are requested for download.

By only REQUESTING the download from the server (not actually downloading anything) the size of the file is automatically deducted from the available daily bandwidth, regardless of if the file is fully or partially downloaded - or even downloaded at all.

To break it down even simpler, say you have a file that is 1GB in your account on the 25GB/day plan, and you share the file's public link with a single person. That person clicks the link 25 times, each time cancelling the download before it even begins. There goes your daily bandwidth without the file being transferred a single time.

So what's up OpenDrive?

EDIT: OpenDrive claims to have fixed this problem, and they even edited my original post to provide you with misinformation. Unfortunately after over a year they still have not fixed this problem, and this question is NOT answered. I found solutions to my needs elsewhere long ago, I suggest you do the same.

  set a custom plan with more bandwidth - it's only a bit more.

  UPDATE:

  OpenDrive is happy to announce that we have just released the updated bandwidth counter!

  Now users can track bandwidth more accurately with only the amount of downloaded files being deducted from your bandwidth, and partly downloaded or interrupted files deducting only the actual downloaded data.

  We would like to sincerely thank everyone who has given their feedback on this and assisted us on resolving this issue. We understand that it has taken considerably longer than what most users would have liked to see but we hope that every improvement gives you a better OpenDrive experience!

  Did you guys and gurls hear that? OpenDrive did it! Yay! Did not have the chance to check so please someone give some feedback on this :)

  The bandwidth counter reflects the amount of downloaded data that is sent from our servers only, and does not reflect any data received by the client (website browser).

  Once a download begins, our servers start sending data in 1MB blocks. Blocks are queued and will wait for the client to accept them. The bandwidth meter deducts each 1MB block sent from our servers.

  However, there are few situations on the client side which will cause the meter to deduct extra bandwidth after the download was stopped.

  • Client sends a stop request, which is queued after the list of pending blocks (So your bandwidth meter will show that much more data was downloaded than the client actually received)

  • Client is not sending a request to stop the download (The download is paused, the client is closed, or the client is just not sending a cancel request at all. In this case, the bandwidth meter will deduct the whole file size from your bandwidth limit.)

  Therefore, your bandwidth usage depends on the client you use to download your files.
